Education providers

We provide a comprehensive range of educational activities for doctors practising in rural and remote locations. Our education programs have been proven to provide educational benefit to rural medical practitioners and each one fits into the vastly different practices of Fellows and members of the College. 

The College's standards for professional development require educational and quality assurance activities to be high quality and relevant to rural practice. As such, educational activities are required to meet a number of criteria before they are accredited, awarded points and promoted to our Fellows and members.

Professional Development Program accredited activities

A wide range of educational activities relevant to rural medicine can be credited towards the requisite 100 PDP points each triennium.

Accrediting activities

If you are an education provider, it is important that you are aware that the College accredits activities, not providers.

If you provide more than one activity please ensure that each of your activities is accredited individually.

It is important to note that if your activity is to be held a number of times, in the same or various locations, it only needs to be accredited once.

Accreditation with the College is simple and will not cost you anything.

To apply to have an activity accredited, you must first be set up as an education provider with the College. You only need to do this once, by completing the following education provider registration form.

We will process your provider registration and send you an email with instructions on how to apply for accreditation of your activities. 

Once accredited, your activity is added to our Activity Search used by our members to search for educational opportunities.

Accrediting Advanced Life Support courses

Advanced life support (ALS) is a mandatory component of the ACRRM PDP for its’ Fellows (FACRRMs). 

ALS course providers will need to ensure that the attendees who are reported to ACRRM have been assessed as having undertaken a course which has provided them with the following skills and knowledge:

  • an understanding of, and practical competence in both basic life support (including CPR, etc) and advanced life support with a focus on the issues that a rural practitioner might encounter
  • competence in airway management techniques that include basic airway manoeuvres such as Guedel airway, bag and mask, oxygen therapy, and more advanced airway manoeuvres such as the use of laryngeal mask or intubation
  • demonstrated ability to efficiently use a manual difibrillator and an automated external defibrillator (AED) 
  • demonstrated ability to identify and manage basic life threatening arrhythmias such as VF and VT, and
  • competence in intravenous access or intraosseous access and have understanding of the administration of drugs in resuscitation, in particular the dose and frequency.

Basic life support is mandatory component for non-Fellows.

Retaining accreditation

To retain the College’s accreditation on your educational activities, you agree to:

  • upload a list of member attendances*, including membership numbers, plus a summary of evaluation one week following the activity via My events on your ACRRM dashboard (templates supplied)
  • provide attendees with a record of their participation.

Criteria for the accreditation assessment

The following criteria are used to assess PDP provider applications:

  1. Is there evidence in the application that the planned educational activity is based on a rural medical practitioner’s educational needs?
  2. Does the activity relate to the College's Primary Curriculum?
  3. Are rural medical practitioners involved in the planning and implementation stages of the educational event/activity, where relevant?
  4. Does the educational event/activity have clear, specific learning objectives?
  5. Are the planned educational strategies based on adult learning principles?
  6. Does the educational event/activity include a combination of educational interventions, which predispose, enable and reinforce behaviour change?
  7. Does the application show that some impact evaluation (changes in knowledge, skill, attitude, practice or patient outcome) is planned?

Promoting your activity

You will be provided with an Accreditation Tick which can be used when you promote the accredited activity yourself.

The College also offers a range of ways to promote your educational activity:

  • All accredited activities will feature in the Activity Search on our website at no cost
  • Advertising is available in our Country Watch enewsletter, and
  • Additional banner advertising is available on our website, and can be targeted specifically to the Continuing Development section.
